Anuj Jain discusses the advances in cabling technology, fiber optic cabling and increased demand for wired networks

The networking market has witnessed a leap because of the growing need for the convergence of voice, video and data in organisations. Last year we saw the trend of feature-rich networking equipment. As the trend continues to rule the market in 2007, it brings with it the need for integrated networking equipment both in enterprises and server message block (SMBs) in India. The cabling industry is seeing robust growth and the wired connectivity continues to grow. The year ahead will also see greater acceptance and demand from the small office home, offices and home segment, as the technology becomes more affordable. Demand for bandwidth has grown dramatically, resulting in an increased need for higherspeed active components. Industry projections over the next three years show an increase in the market share for both the Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet hardware. According to Frost & Sullivan, increase in bandwidth leading to wide communication channels and falling tariffs has resulted in increased demand for wired networks in the telecom and IT sectors.Mobility being the most important driver for the WLAN equipment market, the flexibility to access and communicate through the network has resulted in greater adoption of WLAN. Cat 6 cabling is the latest addition to the structured cabling standards and has twice the bandwidth of category 5e cabling. This improved bandwidth, together with vastly improved immunity from external noise, provides the potential for Cat 6 to support multi-gigabit applications. It would be unfair to think that all action in the structured cabling market is limited to 10G over copper. Today cables in the Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6 (10G ready) and Cat7 categories are largely sold and cat5e and cat 6 dominates the large part of the networking market.

CAT 6 connectors Although
Cat 6 and Cat 5e connectors may look alike, Cat 6 connectors have much better transmission performance. A Cat 6 connector is 12 times less noisy compared to a Category 5e connector. This vast improvement in performance of cat 6 connectors has been achieved with new technologies, new processes, better materials and significant R&D resources. The CAT 6 connectors are engineered to provide superior performance and reliability, supporting Gigabit Ethernet applications and beyond. The advanced printed circuit board design is tuned to provide optimum signal quality with maximum headroom, allowing it to exceed TIA/EIA category six performance standards. It offers superior signal quality and noise reduction due to its enhanced near-end and far-end crosstalk cancellation and minimum return losses. Flat back IDC construction offers faster installation through its straight through in-line termination design and one-piece snap-on termination cap.
