The Machinist presents views from the manufacturing industry, on their understanding of safety on the shopfloor


How important is safety on a shopfloor?
Safety on shopfloor is as important as production/quality on shop floor. Unsafe conditions and unsafe acts both affect production, quality and most important, the wellbeing and morale of the employees.

What are the repercussions if the safety issue is treated lightly?
Safety if treated lightly will result in: -
?? Unsafe conditions may reduce the productivity of employees and may lead to accidents resulting in injury to the employee and consequential loss of production.

?? Unsafe act resulting from ignorance of safety procedures or over confidence may lead to accident resulting in injury to employees and consequential loss of production.

?? In both the above cases, it may also lead to damage of plant, machinery and injury to other co-employees and neighbourhood at large.

Inspite of safety measures adopted, in case a worker meets with an accident, what are the measures taken by your company?
We immediately provide first-aid service in our own dispensary, which is manned by qualified persons, and take him to the hospital for further treatment and also complete the statutory formalities as provided in the Factories Act and ESI Act. Later on we undertake an inquiry to arrive at a 'Cause and Effect' analysis of the accident and discuss it at the shopfloor so as to prevent such future incidences.

What steps have you implemented to ensure that the shopfloor is devoid of accidents?
We have implemented '3S' to improve housekeeping at shopfloor. This is an effort to remove unsafe conditions.We display safety posters and banners in our shopfloor; also we are organising workshops in collaboration with Central Board of Workers Education to reinforce safety consciousness among the employees.

Do you follow any specific rules in terms of handling machinery?
The Factory Act 1948 has two chapters named Safety and Provisions related to hazardous processes. Under these two chapters the State Governments are authorised to draft and
