Making the mark

Sandvik introduces 'Xtratec', Walter's new range of tools, which promise increased productivity

Sandvik Group, with its headquarters in Sweden, is a hightechnology engineering group with advanced products and leading positions in selected areas – tools for metalworking, machinery and tools for rock excavation, stainless steel, special alloys and resistance heating materials and process systems.

Sandvik, which has a majority stake in Walter AG, is planning to showcase Walter’s new range of tools, ‘Xtratec’, at IMTEX 2004. Walter AG’s operations include tools for metalworking, software systems for tool-management and numerically controlled grinding machines. The new Xtratec range can increase productivity by up to 100 per cent in comparison with existing tools. The range includes F4033 face milling cutter, F4042 universal shoulder milling cutter, F4041 shoulder milling cutter having inserts with four edges, and B401X drill with exchangeable heads.

The F4033 cutter is fitted with double-sided square inserts with eight effective cutting edges. This considerably reduces the cost per cutting edge. The basic shape and the insert seat feature a negative geometry that provides high stability and therefore high operational security. The cutting angle is highly positive due to the sintered-in chip grooves. The geometry of inserts combined with Walter’s new cutting materials permit maximum cutting data even on low powered machines. Cutters are available within the diameter range 40-160 mm.

The F4033 cutter is recommended to companies that have to machine a variety of different workpieces, and therefore require a flexible tool system, as well as to mass producers where high productivity is of prime importance. The F4042 universal shoulder milling cutter has an approach angle of precise 90° which prevents the generation of steps on the produced shoulder face, thus reducing the number of required operations. The F4042 cutter covers the complete range of metal cutting operations, and it is especially recommended for the roughing and finishing of steel, cast iron and nonferrous metals.
