Is the third generation mobile technology a hype or is it really happening? LV Sastry tries to find some answerst

As the success of the Indian telecom growth has now become a world story, new technologies are offering significant opportunities to take this industry to the next level. Significant amongst these is the third generation mobile communication technology, more popularly known as 3G. The marriage of computers, Internet and connectivity is here to stay and with more applications and business now running on Internet, the demand for bandwidth and speed is ever growing. As the networks or connectivity becomes more important, than ever before, computers and Internet have come to depend upon the network and connectivity service providers more than ever before. The 3G technology is promising to offer the next wave of significant boost for both Internet and mobile applications. With over 200 companies across the world deploying 3G telecom services, it will be the next big opportunity for growth for the telecom industry, as the trends and applications are emerging. With many of them in Asia, the markets in Asia Pacific offer the biggest opportunity. While all three parties – the network operators, the vendors and the third party content developers have jumped into the fray to create the business applications on 3G. The question however remains – Is 3G a hype or happening? The protagonists are all pouring their dollars and betting big time while the critics are yet to join the bandwagon.

What is 3G?
3G is the next generation of mobile communication technology, offering a wide range of high speed mobile services, including video calling and messaging, email, games, photo messaging and information services. It is the mobile phone technology standard supporting simultaneous transfer of both voice data (a telephone call) and non-voice data (such as downloading information, exchanging email, and instant messaging). 3G mobile network is the systems and services based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of standards under the International Mobile Telecommunications programme, ‘IMT-2000’. 3G promises increased bandwidth, up to 384 Kbps when a device is stationary or moving at pedestrian speed, 128 Kbps in a car, and 2 Mbps in fixed applications. 3G will work over wireless air interfaces such as GSM, TDMA and CDMA. The new EDGE air interface has been developed specifically to meet the bandwidth needs of 3G. 3G uses 5 MHz channel carrier width to deliver significantly higher data rates and increased capacity compared with current 2G networks and includes capabilities and features such as Enhanced multimedia (voice, data, video and remote control), multi platform usages such as cellular telephone, e-mail, paging, fax, videoconferencing,Web browsing) and Broad bandwidth and high speed upwards of 2 Mbps. Speed is an important aspect which differentiates this technology – the speed of 2G is 10 kbps, 2.5G is 64–144 kbps and for 3G is 144 kbps–2 mbps. The mobile telephone companies use systems that are circuit-switched and hence the connectivity depends upon
